When Emmanuel Homes crew arrived, there was a home fire burning.

Camping

Camping

The project started by moving to Limpopo Province to a rough camp.  In tents and sleeping bags with basic "tree like" accommodations.  For most, this was the first experience camping.  Looks like they did okay!

Chipping

This was the initial phase of a project with Emmanuel Homes.  This project will include the following partners:

A World Aware, SA;
African Harvest;
Prince Ministry;
Zumani-Lekang Children's Home.

The crew eagerly participated in the cutting of poplar trees to be used as ribs for tower gardens.  In just  under 4 hours of work they had cut almost 100 trees and prepared them for their intended use.

Harry Parham

Harry Parham from African Harvest teaches the concept and construction of the tower garden to these students.  Once they heard the whole story of how these gardens started in Leseding everyone was anxious to get going and start building.

A visual inspection of the towers in Leseding showed not only how productive they are, but also how needed they are.  Here is Glenda with a successful garden.  Part of the lesson, the trees cut earlier in the day will literally put food on someone's table very soon.

Leseding

Visiting the township at Leseding, the crew met Katrina.  This lady is a supplier of the plants used in the gardens.  She produces hundreds of plants, but soon the demand will be more than she can produce.

Ivy's kids were very interested in her life here, and learned more about themselves while learning about Katrina.  Life here is difficult, but there is joy wherever you look.

Jim is a resident of Leseding too.  When the crew visited with Jim they learned that he was born without legs.  Yet, he is an example to his community. Notice his tower garden in the background.  He has successfully grown food for himself, his brothers, and has shared with his neighbors.  Here he is holding a solar powered flashlight given to him by friends of African Harvest.  Jim is a wonderful person, the teens enjoyed getting to know him and definitely want to see him again.

Sable

It was not all work.  After a hard day in the sun, traveling to Leseding and learning how to build the tower gardens, and remember, everyone was keeping their camp too, cleaning up and carrying on, then we went on a brief game viewing drive.  The royal antelope, the Sable at the left is a remarkable creature and a rare sighting.

This giraffe was much closer when first spotted, but by the time we got the crew out of the Vito it was happily hiding behind a row of trees.  There are actually 3 giraffes in this picture with the very interested onlookers.

The Crew

Final moments. Everyone packed and ready to return to Johannesburg. It was a great trip, one that we hope will be repeated again soon! Pictured here front row (l to r) Isaac; Sibongele; Salomzi.  Back row (l to r) Christina; Vicky Baldwin (Peggy's niece); Vusi; Thembe; Glenda and Felicia.
